Industrial Vacuum Pumps

4 sections

Industrial vacuum pumps have many applications and come in multiple different forms and configurations. Consumers should research the type of pump that will best suit their needs in order to make an informed purchasing decision. Different types of pumps serve different purposes. Generally, these pumps remove gas particles from a sealed volume leaving behind a partial vacuum. They were first invented in 1650 and have undergone many technological advances since then.

Types of Industrial Pumps

There are many different types of pumps with different industrial uses. A few of these include rotary vane pumps, liquid ring pumps, articulated piston pumps, oil pumps, dry pumps, and rotary vacuums. Each is manufactured differently and serves a different purpose. Oil vacuum pumps are pumps which require lubrication in order to operate. Dry vacuum pumps do not require oil and instead operate either by utilizing gas compression or a mix of gas compression and mechanical compression. Dry vacuum pumps do not require any fluids in order to create a vacuum.

Centrifugal Pumps Many types of pumps use centrifugal force in order to convert mechanical energy into fluid energy. These pumps are technically classified as turbomachinery in many cases. Fluid enters the pump and then comes in contact with an impeller. The fluid then goes into a diffuser before leaving the pump. These types of pumps can also be used as water turbines. This is done by putting them into reverse and then converting their fluid energy into rotational kinetic energy. There are a few different types of centrifugal pumps, including rotary pumps and liquid ring pumps. These kinds of pumping systems are generally considered to be highly efficient pumping options. Rotary Vacuum Pumps Work by utilizing positive displacement. This means that it forces a designated amount of fluid through the pump's inlet pressure system. Rotary vane pumps are made up of multiple vanes that are attached to a rotor inside a cavity, hence the name. Centrifugal force extends them from their slots as the vanes turn. This then forms compression cells. When using a rotary type pump it is important to make sure that all of its parts and components are serviced at regular intervals to avoid possible mechanical complications. This type of pump is frequently used for low-pressure chemical deposition systems. They are also frequently used for secondary air-injection. Rotary vane pumping systems are most commonly used in the automotive industry. This pump can be used in a few different parts of an automobile. It is able to help with things like braking, power steering operations, transmission systems, and supercharging. Additionally, this type of pump is sometimes utilized by the food and beverage industry. One common example of this is its use in espresso or soda dispensing machines. It can also be used in things like air conditioners, and in laboratories and other areas where fluids are commonly pumped. Liquid Ring Pumps Electric vacuum pumps that are used for a variety of different purposes. They use positive displacement as the impeller rotates. In most cases, water is fed through the pump and then centrifugal force helps to move a cylindrical ring against the interior casing unit. The liquid ring then makes multiple seals in the spaces between the impeller vanes. This is what forms the compression cells. The liquid sucked into the compression chamber stabilizes the ring. These pumps can come in singular or multi-usage forms. Multi-usage liquid ring pumps have two compression chambers in most cases. The liquid volume released by the rings decreases the remaining vacuum capacity. Single-stage pumps produce around 35 Torr and two-stage pumps typically can produce a vacuum of about 25 Torr. Articulated Piston Pumps Industrial pumps that function similarly to the way that the engine of an automobile engine does. The piston moves downward into the cylinder causing air to be through an intake valve. When the piston moves in an upward motion, air is allowed to exit through an exhaust valve. There are two rings that are backed with springs which seal the piston against the cylinder. Articulated piston pumps are very well suited for applications in which high flow and pressure rates are simultaneously required. Rotary Style Screw Pumps Have two rotary screws that are parallel to each other in the pump housing system. The screws move in sync and turn in opposite directions causing compression. Gas is then compressed toward the pump's discharge port. Cooling of the pump happens by utilizing a water cooled outer chamber. One of the main upsides of this form of pump is that it does not require any lubrication in the pump chamber. This is helpful in eliminating pollution. Electric Dry Screw Pumps Trap the medium that needs to be pumped between their cylinder and screw chambers. They have two screws, each rotating in a different direction. This advanced design helps aid in lower energy consumption. This also helps compressed gas to maintain lower temperatures. With this type of pump, cooling is achieved by mechanical processes. This eliminates the need for water or other indirect cooling methods to be used. Claw Pumps Electric vacuum pumps that have two rotors which don't touch during rotation. When the rotors are turning, gas is able to move from the suction side toward the pressure side. In this way, the gas becomes compressible. Air that has been cooled is then drawn toward the compression housing area to help reduce its temperature before leaving the pump. Positive Displacement Pumps Operate by using a mechanism which alternates the expansion and sealing of certain cavities. These pumps are used mainly for things like lower vacuums and can sometimes be paired with momentum transfer pumps. When these types of pumps are paired, positive displacement pumps begin the momentum transfer and the momentum transfer pump then transfers the energy continuously with the higher vacuum. Some types of these include molecular pumps, momentum transfer pumps, and entrapment pumps. These types of pumping systems can also be found in use within aircraft flight instrument panels, analytical instruments, milking and freeze drying machines, and many different types of water and sewage systems. Molecular and Momentum Pumps Remove the air from within a chamber using blades that rotate at high speeds. These tend to work best for higher vacuum systems. Entrapment Pumps Actually capable of solidifying gasses using a process called ionisation. They can also solidify gasses using very low temperatures or chemicals. Because of this, they are also normally found in use with very high vacuums.

Vacuum Pump Oil

Many types of pumps require lubrication. There are a few different forms of oil that these types of pumps can use. For instance, oils for rotary type pumping systems have an abnormally low vapor pressure. These oils are usually mineral oils that are designed to meet the necessary vapor pressure requirements of rotary pumps. The oil that these pumps require varies depending on which type of pump it is being used for. Some purposes that pump oil can serve include sealing, lubrication, cooling, corrosion protection, flushing contaminants, and noise reduction. If the type of pump a consumer is looking to purchase requires oil, they should ask the manufacturer which type of oil will be best for that specific pumping unit. This can help ensure that their particular pump will perform in its optimal form and can help save both time and money in the grand scheme of things.

Applications of Industrial Vacuum Pumps

As previously stated, These industrial pumps remove gas from an enclosed area in order to create a vacuum. Industrial vacuum devices are used in various industries including the pharmaceutical, gas & oil, food and beverage, and power generation industries.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Vacuum Pump Manufacturer

When shoppers are looking to purchase vacuum pumps there are a few things they should take into consideration. What type of pump are they going to need? What manufacturer should they purchase from? What use will the pump ultimately be put to?

Choosing a quality pump manufacturing company can be critical to the success of many industrial operations. Each vendor has different quality standards and specifications.
